women bullfighters
06.29.04 (7:31 am)   [edit]
A real problem in bull fighting world (not so subjective like if it should be stopped or not) is the male chauvinism.

Spain had a few women bullfighters like Juanita Cruz, Conchita Cintrón, Maribel Atiénzar, and other, but they had much less recognition than men.

A clear example is CRISTINA SANCHEZ DE PABLOS, a brave bullfighter from Madrid. She started fighting in 1986, when she was 14 years old. After 13 years of great performances, she finally left the sport in 1999 due to the position of the bull fighting world in ignoring her. They simply left her out from the posters of the "corridas", although the great work she was doing. As she said "The limit has been I couldn't see myself announced in my fair (San Isidro, Madrid)".

If women are able to take a career so dangerous like that, they shouldn't be discriminated. If they want to dare their lifes it's their problem. Or maybe the problem from men's point of view it's THEY don't want to dare to be surpassed by women.

(note: I'm a man, I'm not feminist but I have to be fair).

Tradition or aberration
06.22.04 (9:02 am)   [edit]
From Shark99 's comment (thanks), here's the second argument (actually, it's one of the most common):

Argument #2:

Pro - bullfighting: "bullfighting is a part of the Spanish culture and heritage, and other countries should have no say in it".

against bull fighting: Nobody has the right to promote a culture that is harmful to people or animals. Genital mutilation in Nigerian women is also part of their culture, but nobody can endorse it because it's tradition
------------------------- ------------

Personally I think we have to be careful when comparing the cruelty to humans and to animals, because the human life is much more important. Otherwise, you can't use a mistake to justify another one. I mean, people here in Spain say "they're against bullfighting but a lot of people endorse the war in Iraq where they're killing humans". The war is bad, but it doesn't make bullfighting acceptable itself.

Arguments pro and against bull fighting
06.21.04 (7:23 am)   [edit]
In the next posts I'll be publishing arguments against and pro- bull fighting. I'll not post any personal argument, just what I hear around. Please judge it by yourself. I'm open to publish arguments sent by our readers.

Argument #1:

Against bull fighting: It's a terrible cruelty to the bovines. They suffer and die just to give you pleasure.

Pro - bull fighting: People eat meat in many places. To have a beaf on your table you're endorsing a massacre so cruel (or more) than in the arena. Just for your pleasure as well.

Well, the last argument is not valid if you're vegetarian

Poll added
06.21.04 (7:08 am)   [edit]
I've added the poll in the left menu to know if the most people is against bull fighting or not. This blog is supposed to be impartial, and let the world know the truth about this sport. So, I'll try to publish both opinions, from people the think it's a bad treatment to animals and from others that think it's a valuable part of hispanic culture.

What do you think?

Poem about Bull Fighting
06.16.04 (6:51 am)   [edit]
Thanks Meadow for the the comment on Lorca's poem.

Gacía Lorca made the poem "Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejía" as a tribute for his great friend and patron (Majía also was patron of some great Spanish artists like Manuel de Falla, Damaso Alonso, and others). Mejía died by a gangrene after a bull hit him in august, 1934 (Yes, sometimes the bull wins). You can read the poem here.

Ignacio Sanchez Mejía was more than one of the most important bull fighters in the History. He was also writer, actor and President of the Betis Football Club and a great and original person. As Lorca said:

"It will be a long time, if ever, before there is born
an Andalusian so true, so rich in adventure."

Famous Bull fighting parties
06.14.04 (10:56 am)   [edit]
There are some "Fiestas" in Spain where the bulls are some of the protagonists:

1 - San Isidro, Madrid. On May 15th there is the Fiesta de San Isidro to the honour of Madrid's patron, one of the most spectacular events in all the year with numerous concerts and other kinds of public performances, including bull fightings.

2 - San Fermín, Pamplona. Takes place on 6th of July till 14th of the same month. TV-spectators in all the world are surprised, impressed or shocked each year when they watch the spectacle of bulls running in the streets with brave men and women.

3 - Feria de Abril, Sevilla. This collorful event is much more than bull fighting. Every end of april people can see performances of flamenco and sevillanas, typical food and of course in the camp built to host the party.

a brief introduction on bull fighting
06.10.04 (6:59 am)   [edit]
Bull Fighting is both sport and art. Probably most people have an idea or image about this unique cultural event, but do you know how it is "played"?

I say "played" because it's like a game, between the fighter ("torero" o "matador de toros") and the animal. Of course the bull always die, but sometimes it's like the bull wins, when it hits the fighter and he becomes unable to go on.

It's supposed to be a fair fight (actually it isn't, I'll show you later), because the bull fights with its horns and the "torero" with his spade, always face to face (You'll never see a figther hitting the bull in other position).

Parts of the fighting:
1) "El paseillo" - 15 minutes after, all fighters go to the chapel in the arena and pray. After that, they enter to the ring ordered by age.
2) "Toreo de Capa" - After the bull is in the ring, the fighter starts to induce it into different movings using his cape.
3) "Tercio de Varas" - In this part a man in a horse picks the bull several times, always in its back.
4) "Tercio de banderillas" - This is one of the most exciting parts. The figther, alone with the bull, pick it in the back with small lances. It produces lots of blood, an when the bull moves the lances damage it more and more.
5) "Tercio de muleta" - The fighter uses the cape and the spade at the same time, preparing the bull to its dead.
6) "La estocada" - The fighter waits in front of the bull. Then, he runs and sticks the spade in the bull's back. Sometimes the bull doesn't die in the moment. So, the fighter uses another spade (shorter) to hit its spine. When the bull is dead, the fighter cuts one of its ears, as a trophy. The fighting is done.
